* I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher and am voluntarily leaving a review.*I did not like this book, in my opinion it was a hot mess.
There were so many glowing reviews that I thought maybe I was being too harsh, so I waited a full day before leaving a review and that respite did nothing more than solidify my already low opinion.
When Lady Viola was 17 and in her first season, she gloried in her popularity and played games with her many suitors. Games that resulted in twin brothers having a duel and killing each other and Viola fleeing to the country.
Eight years later, Brock the older brother of these two twits has inherited their father's title and has returned from the wars intent on Restoring the estates, finding a wife, siring an heir and enacting vengeance on the selfish debutante that ruined his life by causing the deaths of his brothers, which in turn caused his fathers death.
This could have been a good book - but it was just so unbelievable - Brock and Viola meet 3 times for mere minutes and I am supposed to believe that the formed a deep abiding love? In addition to this the author completely butchered the formal address for most of the characters to worst being Viola's father, he is the Duke of Liperton but is referred to as Lord Liperton and addressed as my lord. There was not a "your grace" to be found in this book despite the fact that two primary characters are dukes and one is duchess. The numerous secondary characters were all annoying (with the exception of Harold - he was the only bright spot in this book). And EVERYONE blames Viola for the death of Brock's family - even though The twins were older than Viola apparently she had the power to make them kill each other? It boggles my mind - i'm not implying that she didn't have some responsibility in the duel, but their actions were their own and how anyone to blame her exclusively is beyond me. Not only is she blamed, but this is eight years later and supposedly her name is still showing up in the scandal sheets? Please! And while I am ranting - exactly how old is Brock? It was written that he was 12 years old when the twins were born and when the twins have the duel- I am guessing their age based on another character who went to school with the twins and is supposedly seven years older than Viola, who was 17 at the time, so that would make them each around 24 which would made Brock 36 at the time of their death. So eight years later he would've been well over 40 while Viola is only 25. And yet there is never any mention of an almost 20 year age difference? Why the heck is Ruby living with Viola? What the heck happens with the villains? With Rodney? As I said this book is a HOT MESS!!
Bottom line, this book had no romance, no steam, too many secondary characters, numerous plot holes, unlikable leads and it left way too many unresolved story lines.
I would not recommend this book and I don't believe I will read another book by this author.

The whole premise of the novel is that Lady Viola has completely changed her personality after her first season in which the spoiled and selfish young girl she then was engaged in conduct that led to the deaths of twin brothers in a duel over her. The book jumps ahead 7-8 years. Viola has been banished from London to the country, has been running a very successful horse farm, has "reformed" and helps an orphanage etc. We are told all this incessantly by the author and the heroine. She whines all the time Why can’t anyone believe that she has really changed?
Well, I can tell you why. The author does not present Lady Viola in any way that remotely shows she is truly remorseful or understands what she did. The author merely tells us that the h suffers from guilt but really really has learned her lesson and is no longer selfish etc. But repeatedly the h engages in very immature and selfish conduct and there are too many "poor little me" pity-plays for the reader to believe that Lady Viola has in fact really changed.
The plot has the twins' older brother Brock buying foals from the h and of course the two are immediately attracted to each other. Brock does not know that she is the woman who caused the death of his brothers because she is using a different name with him. He feels guilty because he wasn’t there when his brothers were killed but was off fighting. The relationship between the 2 protagonists was just not very believable not very enjoyable for that matter.
Viola has a companion, Ruby, who lives with her because Ruby's mother can’t stand to be around her apparently. Ruby is supposedly Viola's best friend but she seems not to like Viola very much, based on the dialogue. I had real difficulties with their relationship--seemed more like constant sniping than the close relationship the author tells us they had.
I was also very bothered by the conceit that Viola's father loves her very much, but he essentially agrees with his lover that Viola is to be banished for years and whenever his lover says maybe Viola cannot come back to London because of scandal., he always goes along with it. Hard to believe a father who loves his daughter the way the author tells us he loves Viola would let his lover abuse the daughter--repeatedly and nastily.
And then we have a sub-plot where Viola's assistant is conspiring with the father's lover's son to start a competing business and the assistant embezzles money from Viola's business. We are never told why the lover's son picks on Viola. And the assistant stays with her for 7-8 years just to get revenge for her not liking him when she was a debutante in her first season?? And it takes these two nincompoops how many years to set this up?? Really silly. And we are told how intelligent the h is, but she doesn’t notice rampant embezzlement such that her business is ruined?? Please.
All in all, the plot was missing pieces, characters were ill-drawn with the author telling us things about their characters but then having them act in a different way, there were a bunch of loose ends that never got tied up, things seemed very rushed.
Word to the author--if you want us to believe what you tell us about the characters, make them act and talk in a way consistent with your sketch of their characters.
