Several months after confessing his love for Lark, his former partner at the Intergalactic Investigations Bureau, Derek Carlson is hired to extract a sniper from the Kraxnafton prison on Lithusia. He hopes the mission will allow him to uncover the identity of the traitor responsible for his own imprisonment.
Lark is certain the mission is a setup, but he won't let Derek return to Lithusia alone. Derek is his now, and nothing is going to tear them apart--not a sniper out only for herself, not the IIB, not even the Kraxnafton torturers. Derek's judgment is clouded by dark memories, and Lark must decide whom he can trust. The wrong choice would be fatal for both of them.

When I used to think of Silvia Violet, I admit I thought shifters. Her Wild R Farms stories tickled every fiber of my being with horse shifters, wolf shifters, cat shifters, and soon a bear shifter. I never thought of sci-fi or BDSM. Live and learn as they say.I met Lark in the first book, Abandoned. He was gruff, very unlikeable, and you just wanted to smack him in the head for the way he treated Derek. But all wasn't as it seemed. Lark did things to Derek that he had no choice to do, but also because he harbored a myriad of feelings for the man he allegedly betrayed and allowed to be tortured. (If you haven't read Abandoned, do so before starting this book or you'll likely be lost about what's going on.)
Derek has nightmares that shatter him. Torture. Pain. Even death didn't stop his agony. He knows that the only way he can get back on track, to have his life with Lark mean something, is for him to track down and kill the person who betrayed them and cost him a part of himself. Lark begs him to rethink this. Letting him know that it won't solve anything. But Derek has taken a contract to save a former coworker. One who knows the truth about what happened to him. No matter the cost, he will find who left him stranded on a hostile alien world and he will end them.
The rescue attempt goes badly. The sniper they extract sells them the information they want, but Lark isn't sure who is being truthful. He feels in his gut that this is wrong. Derek needs answers though. Lark will go through whatever hell he has to in order to protect his lover.
Double-dealing, backstabbing, lies, blasters, and some BDSM thrown in makes for a wild ride. I wasn't sure who the enemy was until the end as Silvia Violet layered the story so well. There was a part in the story that made me cringe and another that had my heart soaring with joy. I credit her ability as a writer to make me feel this myriad of emotions.
So, Ms. Violet...book 3? Soon?
